What Little Boys Are Made Of

<| Previous | Next |>

"What little boys are made of" makes reference to a portion of a poem from times past:

What are little boys made of?
Slugs and snails, and puppy dogs tails
That's what little boys are made of!
What are little girls made of?
"Sugar and spice and all things nice
That's what little girls are made of!

What are little boys made of now? As our world has evolved, so have our children. Our little boys live and play quite differently from those several generations ago. They play with brightly coloured plastic toys, and obtain "free" bonus meal toys that are readily attainable and just as readily disposed of; innocently becoming the next wave of fast food consumers.

And what are little boys actually made of? XY chromosomes. I’ve specifically selected the colours blue and green for this piece, because they’re often the colours used for the gender differentiation of little boys from little girls.

Finally, as mothers/caregivers, we still have to pick up after our sons, just in a different way. I have, with these toys combined en-masse, paid tribute to mothers who will continue to pick up after their children in the endless task of parenting.
